Ness SES Supports Mangrove Protection in Navi Mumbai

Employees plant over 330 mangrove saplings in collaboration with United Way Mumbai

Mumbai, Dec 16th 2015: In a major environmental effort towards the preservation, protection and plantation of mangroves on Mumbai’s coastline, Ness Software Engineering Services (SES), a premier provider of outsourced engineering services, initiated a Mangrove Protection Drive in Navi Mumbai.

Ness’s Mumbai Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) teamorganized the drive in collaboration with United Way Mumbai, a well-known non-profit organization, to increase awareness about the importance of mangrove preservation and to provide an opportunity for employees to help make Mumbai a greener city.

Mangroves are salt tolerant shrubs and trees that act as natural barriers against a deluge, absorb carbon dioxide, replicas relojes and protect the coastline from soil erosion. They are home to several bird species such as kingfishers, herons, flamingos, and egrets, and organisms such as insects, amphibians, and reptiles, apart from marine fauna. Because Mumbai is a city built largely on reclaimed land with a vast coastline, mangroves are necessary for the protection of the shoreline and to act as a buffer between the land and the sea.

Enthusiastic volunteers from Ness recently visited a mangrove planation site in Navi Mumbai and planted over 330 mangrove saplings.

According to Pruthvi Nanjappa, Vice President – HR, Ness India, it is important to initiate such efforts to preserve, protect and grow the plant life in and around Mumbai. “Ness is a company that is conscious of the environment in which we operate. It is our privilege to collaborate with United Way Mumbai and have our volunteers devote their time for a noble initiative which can go a long way in augmenting the green cover around this city.”

Says QA EngineerPriyadarshini Pawar, a Ness volunteer, “Despite the marshy soil, we successfully planted over 330 saplings, which have the potential to survive some 300 years, ensuring a better environment for generations to come.”

The concentration of mangroves in Mumbai has substantially decreased over the years due to land reclamation, construction, sewage treatment, etc.

In the early 1990s, approximately over 37 sq.km. of mangroves existed in the city, mainly in Versova, Gorai, Thane, Bandra and Colaba. Various environmental estimates claim the mangrove cover has eroded by as much as 40 percent over the past decade, posing a threat to the city and its people.

Ness volunteers such as Swapnil Wasnik, Sr. Software Engineer, and Yogesh Vaze, Architect say this drive provided a superb opportunity to connect with nature. “It made us realize how critical mangroves are to our city’s future,” say Swapnil and Yogesh.

“Sometimes a small contribution makes you feel happy and inspires you to do more content. That’s what I feel after having participated in this environmental initiative aimed at making Mumbai greener,” says Akshay Tuli, Lead – QA, another Ness volunteer.
