Pidim Foundation is a national NGO working in 22 upazilas of Gazipur, Narsingdi, Narayangonj and Sherpur districts. It was established on 7 Feb 1992 by a group of educated, likeminded-social workers aiming to improve the livelihood of the poor and marginalized community with special emphasis on women and children. It started its journey by implementing a child sponsorship project in the outskirt of Dhaka city with local funding. Pidim later on launched a FS&NI (food security and nutrition improvement) project in Gazipur sadar upazila in 1995 with grants from DIA (Duthch Interchurch Aid), the Netherlands. The project was further extended in the adjoining areas of Sripur and Kapasia upazilas with funding from Episcopal Relief and Rehabiliation, NY, USA. Based on the Gazipur experience Pidim embarked on FS&NI project including Water & Sanitation called ‘Strategic Initiatives for Development of Extreme Poor (SIDEP)’ in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur district in 2002. CORDAID, the Netherlands provides necessary funds for the project. In total 6.47 crore BDT was received and spent on food security and nutrition improvement of the reference people. More than 16,000 poor and marginalized people were covered under the projects.
