Cordaid Rewards Initiative: Care and Health Services for People Living with HIV
Activities:
HIV AIDS/SRH
Cordaid rewards initiatives which link community- and formal health and care services for people living with HIV.
Two prizes of 10,000 Euro each! Last date: 1st Sept 2011 Background Formal health and care services for people living with HIV rely heavily upon and benefit from a well-organized and functioning informal community health and care system (e.g. reduction in lost follow up, increased treatment adherence, psycho-social support, access to sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information, cost reduction on the facility level, improved nutrition, reducing stigma and discrimination). Community-based health care should build on traditional care systems and religious care systems, and it needs to develop strong connections with first line and second line health services. Therefore, linking formal, semi-formal and volunteer caregivers and optimizing linkages and task-sharing is necessary to ensure that people living with HIV can access necessary services. The gains are manifested in improved linkages, good referral systems, quality and inclusive services, and participation of the target groups, beneficiaries and community stakeholders in decision-making processes in policy and programme design and implementation. With women being the main formal and informal providers of the least recognized care and support services, gender issues are at the core of the change agenda. A major push towards community care, will contribute to achieving MDGs and other goals related to inclusion, empowerment, mainstreaming of vulnerable groups, specifically women, participation in economic programs and conflict transformation. Cordaid believes that civil society- and faith based organisations have a crucial role to play in this area and would therefore like to invite such organisations to share their best practices and innovations in linking community- and formal health and care services for people living with HIV.
