Saving Lives at Birth
Grand Challenges Canada, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Department for International Development (DFID) have joined together to launch Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development. Together, we call for groundbreaking prevention and treatment approaches for pregnant women and newborns in poor, hard-to-reach communities around the time of childbirth.
If we are to accelerate substantial and sustainable progress against maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths at the community level, innovative approaches to prevention and treatment across three main domains are needed:
Science & technology; Service delivery; and “Demand-side” innovation that empowers pregnant women and their families to practise healthy behaviours and be aware of and access health care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period, especially within the first two days after birth nnovative ideas that can leapfrog conventional approaches are critical in this area. To foster sustainability, we are particularly interested in ideas that integrate scientific/technological, social and business innovation, an approach we call Integrated Innovation.
The third round of Saving Lives at Birth is now open via savinglivesatbirth.net/apply. We expect to fund proposals through two funding streams: SEED GRANTS (up to $250,000 USD) and TRANSITION-TO-SCALE grants (up to $2 million USD).
Deadline for Proposals is March 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. ET
In its first two rounds, Saving Lives at Birth received over 1100 proposals. After a rigorous review process, the Saving Lives at Birth Partners selected 38 innovations for award. To learn more about the nominated innovations, watch their short videos HERE.
Saving Lives at Birth grantees who have completed a minimum of nine months of their seed grant and have completed their proof-of-concept projects are invited to submit a Grand Challenges Canada Phase II – Transition-to-Scale proposal to begin scale up of their solutions. Grand Challenges Canada Phase II – Transition-to-Scale grants will require 50% matching through partnerships to be eligible for Grand Challenges Canada funding.
