Natura 2000 Award Open for Applications Deadline: 21 January 2015 The Natura 2000 Network is accepting applications for Natura 2000 Award in five different categories. This is pan-European Award that recognizes excellence in the management of Natura 2000 sites and conservation achievements, showcasing the added value for local economies, and increasing public awareness of Europe’s valuable natural heritage. Public voting will open on April 2015 for the European Citizen’s Award to vote for the favorite Natura 2000 Award finalist. Voters will read the summaries submitted by applicants as part of their application to choose their favorite finalist. The summaries will be displayed on the award website, together with a representative photograph chosen by the applicant. The finalists from the five Natura 2000 categories will be invited to participate in a special ceremony in Brussels on 21 May 2015. The winners of the five category awards and the Citizens’ award will each receive a trophy, along with a small financial contribution to help support future conservation efforts. The EC will also help in organizing local promotional events in the winner’s countries. Categories 1.Conservation – recognizing achievements that have improved the conservation status of a particular natural habitat type and/or species. 2.Socio-economic benefits – recognizing the creation of socio-economic benefits for local stakeholders that have come about as a result of activities linked to a Natura 2000 site or project. 3.Communication – recognizing communication achievements that have led to increased awareness about Natura 2000, and which have brought lasting positive changes in attitudes or behavior towards the network. 4.Reconciling interests/perceptions – successful conflict-resolution efforts that have brought together different socio-economic or political forces, or land or resource users, in a way that has benefitted Natura 2000. 5.Cross-border cooperation and networking – establishment of effective partnerships between stakeholders involved in the management/conservation of Natura 2000 sites that are aimed at resolving Natura 2000 issues more constructively than would have been the case if the partners had operated individually. Eligibility Criteria ◾Applicants should be European organizations.
