Cancer.vive Organisation
We are a group of people who feel blessed and privileged to be survivors of cancer. We want to make a difference by helping other people also survive this disease by early detection and appropriate treatment. To achieve our goal, we joined forces with PLWC(People living with Cancer), an existing cancer related Not for Gain Organisation (NGO). We raise funds throughout the year but our main event is an annual 7-day motorcycle ride covering different parts of the country. All riders are cancer survivors. We visit cities, towns both large and small and remote villages with the aim to educate, create awareness, identify and put people in touch with support systems (such as Cancer Buddies developed by PLWC); not only for people who have, or are survivors of cancer, but also their families and friends – a support network. The current education and awareness we do is specifically aimed at the so-called shy cancers – the cancers that most people find it difficult to talk about. These cancers often go undetected because of fear, stigmas, cultural taboos and lack of knowledge. Early detection and appropriate treatment is crucial to survival. We emphasise this since many of us are living proof of being able to celebrate life because we recognized the symptoms, knew what to look for and received the appropriate treatment in good time. Our aim is to: • Raise awareness with the emphasis on the importance of early detection • Educate the masses on the signs and symptoms of shy cancers via printed material, • our website, personal visits, DVDs and media • Giving hope to people diagnosed with cancer • Connecting newly diagnosed people to the network of PLWC’s Buddy Groups More about Cancer.vive · Cancer.vive is a cancer awareness and educational initiative which falls under the umbrella of the well-established NGO, PLWC (People Living With Cancer). · The initiative was started by a group of breast cancer survivors who have been campaigning for years and who recognised the need for awareness and education around other cancers as well. · Throughout the year Cancer.vive has various initiatives all over the country that include fundraising, educational and awareness campaigns and projects. · The main event for the year however is the motorcycle ride through South Africa, now an annual event. · Cancer.Vive s to reaches in the region of 30 000 people directly with their message through various initiatives during the year. · The project is supported by various celebrities including the award-winning comedian, Shimmy Isaacs, Lillian Dube, Janie du Plessis, Myra Maude, Karen Zoid, Claude Pretorius, to name but a few… ·
