Point-of-Care Diagnostics

Point-of-Care Diagnostics

This Grand Challenge seeks to create a new class of point-of-care diagnostics that will be easy to use, low cost, multiplexed and able to assess disease stage and provide information on prognosis. We are taking an Integrated Innovation approach to tackling this challenge.

With the overarching goal of creating a more sustainable market for high performance, low cost point-of-care diagnostics for global health, Grand Challenges Canada and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have launched a joint Point-of-Care Diagnostics initiative. The initiative is focused on the development and integration of best-in-class diagnostic components into one or more interoperable ‘plug-and-play’ point-of-care platforms capable of running a menu of tests from different developers. Each test will be designed with a common interface to the platform, but would otherwise be free to use different sample types, different chemistries and different approaches for analysis. Ideally, a future user would be able to purchase one of a number of competing platforms from different manufacturers, with the guarantee that any platform “certified” under this new standard would be approved and would reliably run a menu of diagnostic tests.

The initiative sets out a two-phased approach:

Phase 1 (Years 1-3) focuses on the development of innovative point-of-care diagnostic components across four topic areas (sample collection, concentration, and preparation; amplification and detection technologies; readout and signal transduction; enabling technologies) with a fifth topic area focused on the implementation research critical for improving sustainable access.

In Phase 2 (Years 4-5) integrators will assemble best-in-class components into one or more flexible, but standard platform architectures that support a menu of tests of different types from different manufacturers.

This completion is now closed.  Click here to access the archived Request for Proposals from May 2010.  If you would like to receive funding for a point-of-care diagnostics related project, please visit the Stars in Global Health program page to learn more about funding opportunities.
