Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF)

Funds for NGOs

Activities: Others

Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF)

The Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) helps Australian researchers from public and private sectors to participate with Indian scientists in leading-edge scientific research projects and workshops.

The AISRF is Australia’s largest fund dedicated to bilateral research with any country and one of India’s largest sources of support for international science.

Available funding: In September 2014, during a visit to India, the Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced an extension of the programme. The Australian Government has committed an additional $20 million to the AISRF over four years from the 2015-16 financial year. Read the media release on the Prime Minister's website.

Information on the current round of collaborative research projects is available.

Competitive funding is available under two components covering a range of science and research priority areas:

Indo-Australian Science and Technology Fund

Indo-Australian Biotechnology Fund

The emphasis of the AISRF is on providing support for collaborative research projects so eligible Australian applicants must have an eligible Indian partner to apply.

Funding is provided to support a number of activities including travel to India by Australian researchers, salaries for research assistants and PhD students, and bench fees.

For more information on how to apply, visit the Applying for the AISRF page.

Administration of funding

The department jointly administers the Science and Technology Fund with the Department of Science and Technology in India.

The department also jointly administers the Biotechnology Fund with the Department of Biotechnology in India.

The Australian and Indian governments jointly determine priority areas for each round of the Science and Technology Fund and the Biotechnology Fund.
