Funds for NGOs Last date 22 May 2015

Activities: Others

Application Deadlines:The first step in the process is to submit a letter of inquiry to us following the guidelines posted here. Please do not submit a full proposal to us without first being invited by our staff to do so.

Our trustees meet twice a year to review proposals, typically in July and December, and funding decisions are communicated within four weeks of the meeting. Letters of inquiry (LOIs) and proposals must be submitted electronically or postmarked by the following dates to be accepted:

For the July meeting:

LOI deadline: 1 March 2016

Proposal deadline: 29 April 2016

For the December meeting:

LOI deadline: 12 August 2016

Proposal deadline: 7 October 2016

Whenever possible, letters of inquiry and proposals should be submitted electronically to info@nebf.org.

If a proposal has been denied for funding, please wait 12 months from the date of your original proposal application to submit a new request to us.

Submitting a Letter of Inquiry

The first step in the process is to submit a letter of inquiry (LOI) to us following the guidelines below. (A copy of these guidelines can also be downloaded here.)

The LOI is a way for us to understand your work, and it can also serve as a basis for further discussion. LOIs are reviewed twice a year, as outlined in Application Deadlines. Please submit your LOI via email to info@nebf.org.

We will review your LOI and let you know if it would be appropriate to develop a full proposal for consideration by the foundation’s board of trustees. Please bear in mind that we are a small foundation, with limited staff capacity, and regret that we are unable to reply to inquiries that are outside of our stated Funding Priorities and Geographic Focus.

LOI Guidelines: Your LOI should include the following elements. Your responses to the questions below can be brief; in most cases one or two sentences should suffice, unless otherwise noted. Please feel free to present this information in a letter format or simply follow the format below to provide your answers.

Contact information: Name and title of key contact. Please provide street address, e-mail address, phone number, and web address (if your organization has a website).

Background of your organization: Please provide a brief paragraph about your organization’s history, mission, and geographic area of work.

Brief project description: In a few sentences, please summarize the project for which you would like to seek support from us.

Project scope: Where will you conduct the project? Please tell us about the landscape or seascape to be affected by your project.*

Bio-cultural diversity conservation targets and goals: Tell us about the biological and cultural diversity values of your area. What will your proposed project seek to protect or conserve?*

Critical issues and threats: What are the issues your project seeks to address? What are two or three of the main threats to your conservation targets?*

Communities involved: What communities will be involved in the project? How will they participate and benefit from the project?

Project objectives: Through this project, what do you hope to achieve in the next year? What are your goals over the longer term?

Strategies and actions: What strategies will you use to achieve your objectives? What is the timeframe for your project?

How does the project relate to the New England Biolabs Foundation’s mission and interests?: Please explain (in one or two sentences) how this project will engage communities in stewardship of a landscape (or seascape) and its associated bio-cultural diversity, ecosystem services, and/or foodways.*

Project team: Who will be conducting the project on behalf of your organization? Please also mention key partners with which your organization is working.

Budget summary: What is the total project budget? What is the amount you would like to request from us? What are your other sources of funding or in-kind support? (Please present this information in US dollars.)

*Local applicants (from the North Shore of Massachusetts) preparing LOIs for projects in the area of “artistic expression” do not need to address questions related to bio-cultural diversity conservation, but should, of course, highlight the needs and issues being addressed by the project.
