NFI is a independent grant making and fundraising foundation, with a core mandate to strengthen philanthropy in India for public welfare and social transformation. NFI was founded in 1992, by a group of eminent leaders such as Late Bharat Ratna C. Subramanium, Dr. M S Swaminathan, Dr. Kamla Chudhury, Late Shri S P Godrej, Late Dr. Verghese Kurien and Mr. Ratan Tata among others. NFI intervenes in seven thematic areas i.e. education, health, livelihood, citizens and society, Peace and Justice, Governance and development Journalism. In the last 20 years, it has supported more than 200 grassroot organizations in 14 states. It has also supported more than 400 individual change makers through its annual fellowship for development Journalism and C Subramaniam Award for community leadership. NFI believes that India can develop meaningfully only when social equity and justice are guaranteed and a sense of respect for our fellow humans is achieved. NFI's distinct nature comes from being completely independent of corporate, religious or governmental control and our focus is nationwide. NFI has partnered with a number of Indian and international donor agencies and is a professionally managed and financially accountable foundation. he National Foundation for India (NFI) Media Awards Programme is for young, mid-career journalists. The award allows them to take time off from their routine beats to research and publish articles/photo essays on issues concerning the less privileged, that need to be high on our society’s agenda, but do not find mention in the mainstream media for a variety of reasons. The awards support the pursuit of in-depth, creative field research on these concerns and writing about them with adequate evidence – qualitative and quantitative – in an effort to influence public policy and the domain of social consciousness. Awards will be given this year to print and photo journalists. PRINT - Two awards in the general category to print journalists to write on broad social issues in India. The articles may be on a range of social issues including Health, Education, Community Ownership and Natural Resources, Livelihood Security, Urban Poverty, Peace& Justice and Role of Youth in Development.
- Three awards to print journalists supported by International Justice Mission will be awarded to write on:
a. Issues of Bonded Labour and Labour Trafficking in the states of Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar (two awards) b. Issues of Bonded Labour, Child Bonded Labour and Labour Trafficking in Tamil Nadu (one award) c.Four awards to print journalists supported by Save the Children will be awarded to write on the issue of Maternal and Child Health, Child Survival and Child Protection. d. Five awards to print journalists to write on issues of Water Sanitation and Hygiene supported by UNICEF.
