Aim/Objective/Mission:

Representing the experiences and realities of marginalized and vulnerable adolescent and young men in India, PLUS (People Like Us -kolkata) is a support group of young people working for the promotion, protection and advancement of adolescent and young mens health and rights, especially their sexual and reproductive health and rights, toward ensuring their meaningful participation and perspectives at all levels of decision-making.
People Like Us (PLUS) Kolkata was formed in end 2001 as an informal support group in Kolkata providing safe space for vulnerable and marginalized adolescents and young boys who are into selling sex, in the city. Later PLUS commissioned a community owned study Prostituted boys in Kolkata city which initiate the organizational backbone. In 2003 PLUS formally registered under the West Bengal Society registration ACT (1961) and has a secretariat based in Kolkata city. Seven elected community member composites pluss board.
PLUS believes that the empowerment of vulnerable young boys and men is necessary for social, economic, political and cultural development and should therefore be seen as integral to the overall work empowerment. Its focus and strategy is advocacy for adolescents and youth rights within the rights based framework.
PLUS achieves its mission through advocacy, capacity building, and communications programs that draw from strategies based on lobbying for inclusion, rights, access and visibilities and by linking with Networking dialogue and awareness for sharing capacities, knowledge, strength and resources.
PLUSs general areas of advocacy are
Equality and equity,
Meaningful participation and perspective in decision-making processes, and
Access to information, education and services with regards to Health and Rights.
Its specific priority areas are:
HIV/AIDS
Diversity of sexualities
Violence against gender variant male
Developing community perspectives for better participation
Presently PLUS runs two different program with two different approaches
Protection Program to vulnerable adolescents and youth to sexual abuse and exploitation and
Intervention and support program for male who sell sex/ male sex worker in India.
