Activities:

The Federation of Environmental Organizations of Cyprus (NGOs) was founded in 1988 and is a network of 20 non-governmental organizations in Cyprus that are active in the areas of the environment, health and culture. The FEO coordinates and supports the actions of its members as long as these actions are in accordance with the principles on which the Federation was founded. The member-organizations maintain their functional and organizational autonomy.

The FEO is a body officially recognized by the state (representing no political affiliation) and participates in related to its activities Councils, Committees and bodies, both in Cyprus and abroad. The FEO does not constitute a political movement and takes pride in keeping its “above-party” character, pursues the goals for which it was formed, and cooperates with all political spheres that work for the environment and the sustainable development.

The FEO submits its views and positions to various Parliamentary Committees, always present at the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment meetings and represented, according to legislation, and can affect the decision made, in numerous National Committees and Administrative Councils. Worth mentioning is the participation of the Federation in the Committee for the Environmental Impact Assessment.

One of the main activities of the FEO is informing, sensitising and mobilizing the citizens in matters of the environment and sustainable development. Towards this aim, it makes its activities known to the general public, organizes exhibitions, conferences and lectures on environmental and cultural issues, participates in radio and television programmes for the promotion of its positions and informs citizens on the issues that it deals with.

In addition, the Federation participates in environmental programmes of the European Union and the Council of Europe that deal, for example, with the creation of cycling networks, the promotion of recycling, the preservation and protection of architectural and cultural heritage, and other.

The Federation is a member of International and European Environmental Organizations like the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), the MedForum, the EEB (European Environmental Bureau) and the MIO-ECSDE (Mediterranean Information Office for the Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development) and it is in direct contact with the European Committee as well as with International Environmental NGOs like the WWF, Greenpeace and others.

The FEO functions according to its related Articles of Association. Each member-organization, regardless of the number of its members, appoints a representative to the Coordinating Committee for a year and the Council of the Federation is elected from the Coordinating Committee. The Coordinating Committee and the Council meet regularly and formulate and develop the positions and actions of the Federation. The actual workings of the Federation are based on the voluntary work of its members and collaborators and on its scientific personnel.

According to the Federation's Articles of Incorporation, an NGO can become member of the FEO if it:

  • Applies, filling the application form,
  • Is a legal entity and has environmental action, certified by its activities, publications and other related events,
  • Has a specific headquarter,
  • Has at least 20 members,
  • Pays the enrolment fee and the first annual subscription payable with the application mentioned above (a).
Each application submitted as above is examined by the Coordinating Committee which decides according to the documents submitted. In the case of a negative decision, the NGO can appeal to the following Annual General Meeting, the decision of which is final for the period until the next Annual General Meeting.
