Activities Involved in: Started in 2002 by organizing rural poor women and formed women Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Bangalore Urban and Davanagere District. Initiated networking of SHGs and involved them in restoring their rights especially health, education and income. Later, started working with child rights and eradication of child labor system. Now working in 90 villages of 34 panchayats in Bidar, Bangalore, Bellary ,Giulbaraga, Raichur , Haveri and Davanagere District on empowerment of rural poor with focus on women and children . Later on MARSS-K extended its activities to community health and education, children and women rights, empowerment of rural poor on Food Security Schemes especially PDS and employment under NREGA, women property rights and empowerment of Gram Sabhas and strengthening PRIs. Please see the Annual Report for the year 2008-09 for more details about the activities. Following are the activities of MARSS-K. Over the last 7 years; a) Organizing rural poor landless women through women and men Self Help Groups (SHGs) and laborers Sanghas; b) Community health services and strengthening PHCs; caring people living with (PLW) AIDS / HIV including rehabilitation and medicine; c) Community involvement in management of local forest and common land through Village Forest Committees (VFCs) under JFPM Program. d) Organizing women and children’s against trafficking /migration and to prevent violation against women and protection of women property rights; . e) Enhancing skill of women through training and capacity building program for additional employment and income generation; f) Empowerment of beneficiaries for Food Security Schemes- Public Distribution System (PDS) and Employment under National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) through Social Audit; g) Empowerment of the rural poor farmers- small and marginal through awareness and training; h) Capacity Building Training Program to People’s Representatives under Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) for Empowerment of Gram Sabhas and strengthening PRIs ; i) Protection and rehabilitation of Child Laborers; Promotion of Child Rights and eradiation of bonded labor, child labor system and drop-outs. MARSS-K has working mainly with the Target Groups Families –landless, small and, marginal farmers with priority to women and Dalits.MARSS-K, is currently working in six districts in Karnataka covering 90 villages of 34 Gram Panchayats and enabled 48,000 rural families and reached 1,28,000 rural population, among them 60% are women, 30% are children and 10% landless laborers. 10. Justification to involve in the Proposed Program: MARSS-K has 15 staff members and more than 30 volunteers both at rural and urban areas. The staffs are experienced and committed and are in different discipline- social mobilizer, gender specialist, agriculturist, rural development and Panchayat Raj, women and children rights, right to information and social audit. The staff has been trained on the social development issues periodically. MARSS-K has a collaborative program with Karnataka Aids Prevention Society under which it runs Community Health centers in six Districts in Karnataka Bellary, Chikkamagalore, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Bangalore Urban&Rural, Haveri.Gulbarga, are also coming under the CHCs program and we are familiar in the local area and working on health and livelihood issues (HULIGESH A.)
