GRANTS We work with partner organisations in Africa and Asia to develop and implement initiatives that tackle urban poverty. This work is funded by a range of donors including the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID), Comic Relief, Big Lottery Fund and the European Commission. We use the funding to send grants to our local partners to conduct the work on the ground. A broad variety of work is supported, ranging from mobilising slum communities to form savings and credit groups, assisting slum dwellers to collect information about their own settlements to negotiate with government for better service provision or secure tenure, through to income-generation support and housing and toilet construction. Donor funding also enables us to provide vital technical assistance and capacity-building support to our partners, complementing the grants we send. For example, we provide technical advice on financial modelling for new housing developments and slum upgrading, affordable and ecologically sound toilet technologies and appropriate house design. We work with our partners to build their internal capacity so that they are better able to support the slum communities they work with, establish pro-poor partnerships with local authorities and scale-up the delivery of housing and infrastructure for the poor. This capacity-building work includes improving our partners’ internal governance structures and financial management systems and procedures. Through the project grants we send and our capacity-building support, we help our partners to develop from localised organisations working with a limited number of slum dwellers on small projects to highly skilled organisations working with national networks of slum dwellers, influencing government policy and practice and overseeing larger-scale housing and infrastructure developments. At this stage, our partner organisations may be able to use our financial services such as the Bond or Guarantee Fund to further scale-up their work on housing and infrastructure for the poor.
